Upon The Sign A Division
Kārikā Prathamā
An empathy, a fondly held discourse, ¦
a fortitude of mind, an openhanded generosity, |
are a profound conjuncture in non·transcendence; ¦
for those signs, those, are of these sages. || 20.1 ||
Kārikā Dvitīyā
In an all around grasping, with foremost confidence, grasping ¦
in the depths of exhaustion, in duality fully grasping, |
from the domain of karma, and from undertaking a practice also, ¦
shall be for knowing broadly, the sign five fold. || 20.2 ||
Upon The Householder Proceeding Onward To Agreement A Division
Kārikā Tṛtīyā
These Bodhisattvās, indeed, always ¦
are they existing, these 'turners of the wheel'. |
They bring forth, verily, a true path, ¦
for householders, in all these births. || 20.3 ||
Kārikā Caturthā
Acquiring and catching hold, ˰ the going forth, ¦
righteousness gone to, tis the highest; |
doth reveal also, ˰ the going forth, ¦
of these sages, upon all levels. || 20.4 ||
Kārikā Pañcamā
By these innumerable elements, the uniting ¦
proposition, tis of proceeding onward, indeed. |
Householder, from Bodhisattva, the mind ¦
control, from that!, is distinguished. || 20.5 ||
Upon Strong Determination A Division
Kārikā Ṣaṣṭhā
In another life, the coveting of fruition longing, and ¦
a righteous circle; alas, tis like that, and |
the motionless consciousness longing also, of these Bodhisattvas. ¦
In these sentient beings, the fundament of mind (tis) sought after. |
The unpurified, and the increasingly purified also, ¦
are the well purified, upon all bhumis. || 20.6 ||
Upon Fully Comprehending A Division
Kārikā Saptamā
From aspiration, from equanimity, from thought, ¦
from foremost mastery, fully comprehending, |
tis of the linage, drawing out from that, and also ¦
of these sages, upon all these bhūmis. || 20.7 ||
Upon Rising Up A Division
Kārikā Aṣṭamā
From action, and by foremost mastery, ¦
of the aspiration also, is the highest beatitude. |
From absorption in samādhi, and of omnipresence ¦
also, the arising, of these sages, tis consciousness. || 20.8 ||
Upon Divine Abodes A Division
Kārikā Navamā
From the attribute, from the pudgala, is the teaching, ¦
from the skandha perfection's mark. |
From language arts acquiring, and like that, ¦
roaming about the Earth, tis just so, also. || 20.9 ||
Unto The Characteristic A Division, Having Begun
Kārikā Daśamā
The śūnyatā, of the highest retention of self, ¦
in karma's cessation, tis the fundamental state. |
Having taken up, with these contentments, with these meditations, ¦
in a lifetime of desire, from that, tis the highest. || 20.10 ||
Kārikā Ekādaśā
Thence also, of these awakened views, ¦
in mundane existence, is the appearance like a mirage. |
Without also, being to the thought's full detriment; ¦
of these sentient beings, tis an all around maturation. || 20.11 ||
Kārikā Dvādaśā
On rebirth also, having fully thought out, ¦
of complete affliction, is the guarding. |
The one pointed path embraced, ¦
tis a formless state one to the very end, the way. || 20.12 ||
Kārikā Trayodaśā
In the formless state, thereto, tis the renunciation of pleasure, ¦
of the field of action, and the purification. |
Of true maturity, doth the perfection ¦
manifest; also, from that, tis the highest. || 20.13 ||
Kārikā Caturdaśā
Of these meditative absorptions and formulaic invocations, and ¦
of awakened intellect also, thus so, is increasing purity. |
From this also, from the principle characteristic, ¦
shall be greatly knowing, tis the stage indicating. || 20.14 ||
Upon A Plateau Standing, And For A Pudgala Division, Having Begun
Kārikā Pañcadaśā
The increasingly purified view, the well purified moral precept, ¦
tis steadfast, the dharma manifested pure consciousness. |
Upon the continuity of total affliction the virtue of breaking, ¦
(tis) an unmeasurable single moment catching hold the intellect. || 20.15 ||
Kārikā Ṣoḍaśā
Disregarding the abode of little purity, also ¦
perhaps ought be, in true maturity, a most auspicious one of great psychic perfection, |
accomplished in form, and in teaching also. ¦
The śakta practioner of kundaliṇi, so anointed, verily, is a Bodhisattva. || 20.16 ||
The Teaching, For A Foundation, Having Begun
Kārikā Saptadaśā
Unto the essence of all dharmas, having penetrated into, in this world, ¦
tis upon a higher virtue, in following along. |
In higher thought, therefore, tis in two higher wisdoms. ¦
The prajñā's wisdom, indeed, are two sorts perceptible. || 20.17 ||
Kārikā Aṣṭādaśā
For the dharma's essence, thus so, are ignorance ¦
and knowledge foremost; the turns of life, tis like that, also. |
For these insights, is the field of one's meandering actions; from that, ¦
in a dual step, thus so, is the fundamental state. || 20.18 ||
Kārikā Navadaśā
Of these teachings, are the meditations going also, ¦
to fruition; the other one, for the caturvidha, |
tis the unmeasurable formless state, the unembellished mental state, ¦
the meandering about, primarily for fruition. || 20.19 ||
Kārikā Viṃśā
That, just so, tis strong karmic seeds of mental conditioning, ¦
for a second time to fruition, sought after. |
The field of purity, and, of these sentient beings, ¦
the maturing perfection, tis like that, also. || 20.20 ||
Kārikā Ekaviṃśā
Of these trance like, samādhi, incantations also, ¦
the finality, (tis) the highest fruition. |
For the four fold, caturvidha, to fruition, indeed, this, ¦
tis unto the fourth stage, the arciṣmati, taking refuge in. || 20.21 ||
The Five Elements, For A Foundation, Having Begun
Kārikā Dvāviṃśā
The dharma's full essence, having penetrated into, in this world, ¦
of the moral precept's five elements of being, tis the refining. |
The samādhi's discerning wisdom, ˰ ‐of the five elements of being‐, ¦
therefrom, for rising upwards, tis the purification. || 20.22 ||
Kārikā Trayoviṃśā
Of liberation from one's emancipation ˰ the wisdom, ¦
therefore, in these others, (tis) the purification. |
From the four stages of knowledge, from a strong obstruction, ¦
these oppositions, are from a choice, thereto. || 22.23 ||
The Perfection Foundation, Having Begun
Kārikā Caturviṃśā
The unperfected ones, also those perfected ones, ¦
these shall be known, are all stages. |
The perfected ones, thereto, are the unperfected ones. ¦
The perfected ones, also again, are the honoured ones. || 20.24 ||
Kārikā Pañcaviṃśā
Perfection, shall be increasingly known, ¦¦
which manner, in the principles of consciousness, tis by action. |
That, tis the conceptual consciousness, from knowledge. ¦¦
Those minds without thoughts guiding, are also, of that, just so. || 20.25 ||
Kārikā Ṣaḍviṃśā
The meditative state, moreover, is a perfection, ¦
for being thoughtless, on all bhūmi plateaus, |
from the inner conscious self to be realized. ¦
Of Buddhas, tis from the indriya's sense object, thereto. || 20.26 ||
The Plateau Standing Firm, For A Characteristic Distinction, Having Begun
Kārikā Saptaviṃśā
The foremost confidence, indeed, in every way, ¦
tis clarity, the characteristic, desired; |
for non·attachment, for non·affliction, ¦
tis the none higher causation's essence. || 20.27 ||
Kārikā Aṣṭāviṃśā
The penetrative insight, also, in every way, ¦
by every means, tis an equanimity of mind, |
for an immovable discipline's expedient means ¦
knowing, for the circle of births also. || 20.28 ||
Upon These Stages, The Completion, Upon Well Grasping The Characteristic Distinction
Kārikā Navaviṃśā
Not vehement desire, not also an avaricious small heart, ˰ neither being passionate, nor lethargic, ¦
nor unkindness — compassion is going not the one of wrong views; ˰ competent, wavering, is miserable. |
Not an agitated intellect, with these contentments, not also miserable, ˰ suffering not either, doth one well abide, ¦
a true friend, supporting a knowledge on highest; ˰ reverence, tis greatest, upon the teacher. || 20.29 ||
Kārikā Triṃśā
For every meritorious assemblage, for the virtuous one, ˰ having made, tis another holding fast. ¦
Upon perfectly awakened knowledge, tis one brought to respectfully bow, day by day, ˰ one whom, indeed, is the highest expedient means knowing. |
A living being, in self emanating existence, tis always a splendid beam of light, ˰ sports a supranormal cognition, by these guṇa attributes. ¦
By all desires, standing above, the guṇa's ocean, ˰ shall be known, tis he, the awakened nature born. || 20.30 ||
Upon A Well Praised Merit, Therefore, In This Way, A Division
Kārikā Ekatriṃśā
In equanimity, the insightful observation, tis to these going, also. ¦
A duality of five natures, is the thought. |
For wisdom, tis a well praised merit, indeed, ¦
in every manner, in all these bhūmi stages. || 20.31 ||
Upon The Bhūmi Stages An Explanation Division
Kārikā Dvātriṃśā
For observation, for awakened intellect, for the approaching, ¦
of the true method, and for a focused practice, |
the very pungency hath manifested a joyfulness. ¦
The sympathetic unselfish muditā joy, is by that; tis told. || 20.32 ||
Kārikā Trayastriṃśā
From immorality's satiety without stain, ¦
stainless is the bhūmi stage; tis told. |
Of the great dharma's splendour, ¦
from mind and heart, is also the splendour making. || 20.33 ||
Kārikā Catustriṃśā
The lustre of these beings, whom, are bearing up others. ¦
These awakened consciousness views, are burning irritants. |
The arciṣmatī bhūmi, thus so, that, tis from yoga. ¦
She is the bhūmi stage, from duality's radiance. || 20.34 ||
Kārikā Pañcatriṃśā
Of these sentient beings, the ripening to perfection, tis also ¦
of self reflection, and protection. |
By these sages of wisdom, is subdued, the suffering. ¦
The durjayā bhumi, (is) by that; (tis) told. || 20.35 ||
Kārikā Ṣattriṃśā
From facing the moment, of duality, in this world, ¦
of mundane sensory existence, moreover, from being without motion, |
twas said, indeed, the abhimukhī bhūmi, ¦
(tis) the prajñāpāramitā, from one's fundamental nature. || 20.36 ||
Kārikā Saptatriṃśā
From a single going path embracing, ¦
the bhūmi, dūraṅgamā, the difficult to go beyond, tis the perception. |
The duality fully knowing, tis from wavering. ¦
The unwavering also, tis without saying. || 20.37 ||
Kārikā Aṣṭātriṃśā
The infallible analytical knowledge, from the contemplative intellect, well done!, ¦
the bhūmi, sādhumatī, the good intelligence, tis consciousness. |
The dharmameghā, tis of duality all pervasive, ¦
of the dharma's luminous realm, enveloped in cloud. || 20.38 ||
Kārikā Navatriṃśā
In increasing adoration, in splendid accomplishment, ¦
by delight, from roaming about, every time, |
every where, of these bodhisattvas, ¦
these abiding bhūmi stages, are consciousness. || 20.39 ||
Kārikā Catvāriṃśā
Once more, again, the immeasurable, in ourselves, ¦
the rising upwards, tis from the attaining of yoga. |
These living beings immeasurable, are for a fearless means; ¦
for it, thus so, desiring, assuredly, these bhūmi stages. || 20.40 ||
Upon Obtaining A Firm Abiding
Kārikā Ekacatvāriṃśā
Upon the bhūmi obtaining, of strong determination also, ¦
in these wanderings, and from the turns of life, |
from insightful penetration, and of these plateaus, ¦
from the completion also, tis the four fold caturvidha. || 20.41 ||
Upon Spiritual Practice, A Division
Kārikā Dvācatvāriṃśā
In the Mahāyāna, of these inclinations, ¦
in the Hīnayāna also, for the living being, |
in both ways, for a strongly abstaining method, ¦
for discipline also, are these teachings. |
These so practiced, are the four, ˰ of these wise sages; ¦
which manner, tis from the sūtra following along. || 20.42 ||

‐ Upon The Buddha Attribute A Division
Kārikā Trayaścatvāriṃśā
In these sympathetic sentient beings; ¦
O the complete union cessation's impression; |
O the unseparated impression; O tranquility's ¦
inspiration the impression; reverent salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.43 ||
‐ Upon The Liberation Victorious Sense Faculty, The Entire Sense Faculty, A Division
Kārikā Catuścatvāriṃśā
O every strong obstruction freed; ¦
O every realm victorious awakened silent sage; |
by knowledge, shall be known, ˰ all pervading, tis of thee; ¦
O liberated cognition; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.44 ||
‐ Upon Withdrawing To Isolation
Kārikā Pañcacatvāriṃśā
Unceasing, of all sentient beings; ¦
O every painful affliction removing; |
O impurity striking the afflicted; ¦
O empathy; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.45 ||
‐ Upon Observing The Knowledge Of A Remaining Essence
Kārikā Ṣaṭcatvāriṃśā
O renunciation of pleasure unhindered; ¦
O without obstacle steadfast; |
always, in this way, of all ˰ demands; ¦
O release; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.46 ||
‐ Upon Infallible Analytical Knowledge A Division
Kārikā Saptacatvāriṃśā
In the fundamental basis, so then, in the mental object, in the logical proposition, ¦
in speech, in knowledge, and in the teacher, |
in unobstructed thought, tis constantly so; ¦
O great teacher; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.47 ||
‐ Upon The Intuitive Knowledge A Division
Kārikā Aṣṭācatvāriṃśā
Having approached, with these utterances, of those, ¦
upon the wandering practice knowing the catching up to, upon the path, |
in the going forth also, in this way, tis of these living beings; ¦
O well given teaching; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.48 ||
‐ Upon The Attribute's Secondary Characteristic A Division
Kārikā Navacatvāriṃśā
For true nobility, they stride onward; ¦
for thou hast observed, these fully embodied ones, |
from the observation's foundation, of tranquility; ¦
O foundations builder; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.49 ||
‐ Upon Complete Purification A Division
Kārikā Pañcāśā
O the receiving, abiding, renunciation, ¦
the immeasurable, in merit's transference; |
O samādhi, wisdom, for supremacy; ¦
O with vigor obtained; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.50 ||
‐ Upon Force A Division
Kārikā Ekapañcāśā
In the expedient means, in the refuge, in the purification, ¦
of these living sentient beings, in the sages speech, |
in the great vehicle, and in the non vehicle; ¦
O Māra's defeat; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.51 ||
‐ Upon Fearlessness A Division
Kārikā Dvāpañcāśā
O knowledge, cessation, transcendence, ¦
obstacle prevention, intention to act, wandering teacher, |
in the self and other method; otherwise, tis of these bathing ghat pilgrims; ¦
having been not greatly outraged; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.52 ||
‐ Upon A Great Protection Of Mindfulness Standing Firm A Division
Kārikā Trayaḥpañcāśā
Having fully grasped, the teacher, in these gatherings; ¦
O duality, full affliction avoided, |
without great protection, without confusion; ¦
O multitude cultivating; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.53 ||
‐ Upon The Mental Impression Of Arrogant Pride
Kārikā Catuḥpañcāśā
In meandering about, in the place of retreat, ˰ everywhere, ¦
doth not exist, a not knowing everything exertion. |
Everytime, tis of you, O all knowing omniscience, ¦
O the living being's small way of it; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.54 ||
‐ Remembrances, In A Division
Kārikā Pañcapañcāśā
In all true method deeds, ¦
for a time, thou, doth not pass beyond. |
Shall't be not bound, O the deed, eternally; ¦
O remembrance; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.55 ||
‐ Great Compassion, In A Division
Kārikā Ṣaṭpañcāśā
Every world's great darkness of night, ¦
six times, thou doth regard continuously. |
With great compassion, engaged, ¦
encouraged; O lasting impression, salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.56 ||
‐ Upon The Special Attribute A Division
Kārikā Saptapañcāśā
By wandering about, by gaining knowledge, therefore, ¦
by the wisdom thereto, also by the deed; |
O every way, śrāvaka, pratyeka, ¦
buddha on highest; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.57 ||
‐ Every Appearance The Knowledge Of, Upon A Division
Kārikā Āṣṭāpañcāśā
With three forms, tis for the complete awakened consciousness. ¦
To every appearance, greatly going, |
by every means, of all these sentient beings, ¦
tis the desire, O the removing; salutation, let it be, for thou. || 20.58 ||
‐ Perfection, Upon Fulfilment A Division
Kārikā Navapañcāśā
Ungrasped, without fault, ¦
for being without defilements, calm abiding, |
very much visible, are in the entirety of these dharmas; ¦
O non·proliferation of mental constructs; salutation, let it be, for thee. || 20.59 ||
‐ Upon The Buddha Characteristic A Division
Kārikā Ṣaṣṭitamā
Manifesting the highest method, thou art. ¦
Hath every plateau gone forth. |
To every true highest perfection, are firmly grasping. ¦
Thou art every sentient being fully liberating. || 20.60 ||
Kārikā Ekaṣaṣṭā
With imperishable essences unequaled, the uniting, ¦
with these attributes, in the worlds, doth thou observe. |
By the spheres, thereto, tis the unperceivable, also, ¦
in every manner, with divine beings and human beings. || 20.61 ||
